Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it requires a miracle, and that the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility. Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and special creation, and consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes referred to as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the created species.” The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original. Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter. In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This position is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America.
